Nicholas Carr: Thank you, Dave. This is a great moment for me, and what makes it particularly meaningful, particularly gratifying, is that I’m receiving this distinguished award from a man who’s been such an inspiration to me all these many months. Where would any of us be without Dave Winer? I’ll tell you where we’d be: We’d still be surfing static web pages with Internet Explorer. When Dave told me that I would receive this special award, I first broke down and cried, but then, after I pulled myself together, I said to him, “Dave, it’s fine to receive, but what I really want to do is give. I want to give something back to the great Web 2.0 community that’s been like a family to me.” And so I’m pleased to announce that Dave and I have agreed to team up to organize CampWarsKeggerCamp. We believe that the only way to stop this awful CampWars fracture from, well, fracturing even further is for all of us to sit down together – in a true spirit of openness and sharing – and co-create a solution. kinda of makes you wonder why some of the best minds in tech are picking on each other and obsessed with web 2.0 instead of big stories like why the Feds are allowing our telecom sector to inch back towards a monopoly, what Bush’s trip to India means to outsourcing…or may be that is what Dave calls “vacuous”?
Wow. I haven’t checked into this site in awhile, since I decided that consuming blog commentary was the intellectual equivalent of eating a bag of Lays potato chips at 3am (tastes good, empty calories), and I find that Nick is knee-deep in a Kremlinesque brawl over whether web insiders “get it”.
Like Vinnie says, there are so many more important things to write about. The internecine battles over RSS and Web 2.0 ad nauseum are masturbatory at best and distracting at worst.
Nick, my advice is to drop out of the conversation. Return full time to “mainstream media” where you have a chance to influence policy makers and others who don’t inhabit the echo chamber of the “blogosphere”.
