The UnOscars

Dave Winer: The award for highest snark-to-information ratio goes to Nicholas Carr, who constantly sets the bar for would-be snarkmasters.

Nicholas Carr: Thank you, Dave. This is a great moment for me, and what makes it particularly meaningful, particularly gratifying, is that I’m receiving this distinguished award from a man who’s been such an inspiration to me all these many months. Where would any of us be without Dave Winer? I’ll tell you where we’d be: We’d still be surfing static web pages with Internet Explorer. When Dave told me that I would receive this special award, I first broke down and cried, but then, after I pulled myself together, I said to him, “Dave, it’s fine to receive, but what I really want to do is give. I want to give something back to the great Web 2.0 community that’s been like a family to me.” And so I’m pleased to announce that Dave and I have agreed to team up to organize CampWarsKeggerCamp. We believe that the only way to stop this awful CampWars fracture from, well, fracturing even further is for all of us to sit down together – in a true spirit of openness and sharing – and co-create a solution. CampWarsKeggerCamp will be held next Saturday in Dave’s backyard. Ryan King has volunteered to supply the kegs, and Doc Searls has kindly agreed to bring his ECM Giotto Premium espresso maker. As I see it – and I think Dave agrees with me here – CampWarsKeggerCamp won’t be like a traditional Camp. I like to think of it, in fact, as the first unCamp …

    Hilarious!

Okay…this is actually a great suggestion. Next weekend most of us will be at SXSW and at the newest installation of barcamp (a href=”http://barcamp.org/BarCampAustin”>Barcamp Austin), but I think the following weekend is open for me! ;)

Sounds great! Dave? Ryan? Chris? Doc? Tantek? David B?

And the Oscar for best speech goes to

    Jane Fonda 1972 for brevity

“There’s a great deal to say, but I’m not going to say it tonight.”

    Sally Field 1985 for spontaniety

“I haven’t had an orthodox career, and I’ve wanted more than anything to have your respect. The first time I didn’t feel it, but this time I feel it, and I can’t deny the fact that you like me, right now, you like me!”

    Laurence Olivier 1979 for incoherence

“In the great wealth, the great firmament of your nation’s generosities this particular choice may perhaps be found by future generations as a trifle eccentric, but the mere fact of it . . . the prodigal, pure, human kindness of it . . . must be seen as a beautiful star in that firmament which shines upon me at this moment, dazzling me a little, but filling me with warmth of the extraordinary elation, the euphoria that happens to so many of us at the first breath of the majestic glow of a new tomorrow.”

Nick Carr 2006 for smarkiness? Nah, if Goerge Clooney wins tonight he will make you look gentle!

Nick, Clooney did not pick on Cheney in his acceptance speech…

kinda of makes you wonder why some of the best minds in tech are picking on each other and obsessed with web 2.0 instead of big stories like why the Feds are allowing our telecom sector to inch back towards a monopoly, what Bush’s trip to India means to outsourcing…or may be that is what Dave calls “vacuous”?

  4. Brian

Wow. I haven’t checked into this site in awhile, since I decided that consuming blog commentary was the intellectual equivalent of eating a bag of Lays potato chips at 3am (tastes good, empty calories), and I find that Nick is knee-deep in a Kremlinesque brawl over whether web insiders “get it”.

Like Vinnie says, there are so many more important things to write about. The internecine battles over RSS and Web 2.0 ad nauseum are masturbatory at best and distracting at worst.

Nick, my advice is to drop out of the conversation. Return full time to “mainstream media” where you have a chance to influence policy makers and others who don’t inhabit the echo chamber of the “blogosphere”.

small mod to Brian’s comment – dont go back to MSM! Let’s raise the quality of the blog conversation. My definition of “A listers” are those that focus on CIO issues and broad tech policy issues – not those that currently show up on tech.memordandum…

Wally: “Dad, Beaver said that MashUp Camp sucked!”

Dad: “Beaver, now why did you go and say something like that?”

Beaver: “’cause it’s true, Dad. I was at Barcamp and Mashup camp and I thought Mashup camp sucked!”

Dad:”Beaver, don’t you understand that when you say things like that, it hurts Wally’s feelings? Granted, he’s older than and you and mildly retarded because he thinks he is King of the Blogs, but he is still (in the Biblical sense) your brother. Now don’t you think you should apologize to Wally?”

Beaver:”Dad, don’t you know that arguing on the Internet is like competing in the Special Olympics? Even if you win, you’re still retarded.”

Dad:”Well I didn’t think about it that way, Beaver. Gee Wally I think the Beav is right. You are a retard!”
