When I wrote that Oracle, after devouring Retek a couple of weeks ago, would soon be hungry again, I hadn’t anticipated just how soon “soon” would be. It’s now being reported that Oracle has opened talks to buy Siebel Systems, the struggling maker of software for managing customer information. Unless SAP or Microsoft tries to muscle in – unlikely, but not impossible – I’m guessing this is a done deal. I can’t wait to see archenemies Larry Ellison and Tom Siebel shake hands and heap praise on each other. I’m guessing Ellison will be wearing the bigger smile.
